Instructions to make the sandwich recipe, with print overlay.

Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. For complete directions, scroll down to the bottom.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lightly spray the bottom of the casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray. This will help crisp up the bottom of the sliders.
  2. Dice the onion and bell pepper into a half-inch dice.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the diced bell peppers and onions. Seasoning with the Montreal steak seasoning. Brown until no longer pink. Drain well.
  4. Add the sloppy joe sauce, and mix together to combine.
  5. Using a large serrated knife, slice the rolls in half so you have a ‘slab’ of tops and a ‘slab’ of bottoms. Do not separate the rolls or slice them individually. They should stay connected.
  6. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the bottom of the casserole dish. Spoon the meat mixture over the top and spread evenly. Sprinkle with shredded cheese. Add the top slab of rolls.
  7. Melt one teaspoon of butter. Brush the top of the sliders with butter. Finish by sprinkling with Italian seasoning.
  8. Cover with foil, place in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove foil for the last 2-3 minutes so the tops of the rolls are golden brown. Serve and enjoy!

FAQ's

Is sloppy joe just chili?

No, while they make look similar they are not the same thing. Sloppy Joes have a sweeter sauce and are made for buns.

What's the difference between Manwich and sloppy joe?

Manwich is just a brand name for canned sloppy joe sauce that you can use to save a little time in the kitchen.

Is a loose meat sandwich the same as a sloppy joe?

Loose meat sandwiches are just sandwiches made with chopped ground beef. Whereas sloppy joes are made with ground beef and a sweet sauce.

Deb's tips

  • I prefer to use a glass or ceramic baking dish so that the sliders do not overcook the bottom.
  • Make sure that you drain the excess grease well from the beef so that your sauce is not overly greasy.
  • You can use any color of bell pepper for this recipe. I prefer to use green pepper or red pepper for a little pop of color.
  • If you are not a fan of the canned sauce, you can switch it out and use your favorite homemade sloppy joe sauce instead.
  • Are you a fan of really cheesy sloppy joe sliders? If so, add some cheese to the bottom and top of the sloppy joe mixture for more flavor.
  • I like to serve these with a side of french fries or potato chips for a little salty crunch.

Variations

  • I like to use the butter rolls because they are savory and full of flavor. However, the sweet Hawaiian rolls can also be used if you don't mind a little extra sweetness.
  • Are you looking to increase the flavor of the Manwich? You can jazz it up by adding a few dashes of garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Prefer a lower-fat meat option? Ground turkey works well in this recipe just brown it the same as you would the beef. However, you may want to add a small amount of olive oil to your skillet to prevent the meat from sticking.
  • You can use different types of cheese for each of the individual sliders if you prefer. My family likes a mixture of cheddar cheese, American cheese, and mozzarella cheese.
  • If you want to add a touch of heat to your tangy sauce you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to increase the heat.

Storage

Refrigerate - Store the leftovers of these little sandwiches in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.

Freezer - You can freeze the ground beef mixture in a freezer-safe bag for up three months. However, I don't recommend freezing the assembled sandwiches.

Reheat - For the best taste, I recommend reheating the sandwiches in the oven at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until warm all the way through.
