FAQ's

Can I use leftover garlic bread?

Absolutely! Leftover bread will work great in this easy recipe. You can even use stale bread since the sloppy joe mix softens it up.

Why is it called sloppy joes?

This classic dish got its name from a cook named Joe at a cafe in Sioux City, Iowa. He added tomato sauce to loose meat sandwiches and the name "sloppy joe" was born.

Does the bread get soggy?

The bread will soften, but it will not be mushy.  Leftovers will be softer than the freshly baked dish.

Top Tip

I like to use the creamy melting cheese like mozzarella a blend. It makes the best gooey cheese topping!

  • I used a box of Texas toast garlic bread for this recipe, but homemade French bread topped with garlic butter would also work. The cheese garlic bread slices would also work.
  • Make sure you layer the garlic bread slices in a single layer at the bottom of a baking dish so that they cook evenly, and brown up nicely.

Variations

Budget-friendly variations

  • Not a fan of ground beef? Swap it out for ground turkey instead.
  • If your family doesn't enjoy sloppy joe sauce you can use a jar of your favorite marinara sauce instead to make this delicious dish.  And if you want to take this dish to the next level, add some pepperoni slices on top of the cheese for a pizza inspiration.

Storage

Refrigerate - Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Freezer - I don't recommend that you freeze this dish, as it could affect the texture of the cheese and bread.  Don't worry though, you most likely won't have leftovers, it's that good!

Reheat -  To reheat, you can either use the microwave or bake in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10-15 minutes.

**For the garlic bread, I used Texas Toast. You could also use leftover garlic bread and if that's the case, just bake it until it's crispy.
