❤️ Why you'll love this recipe
There's a secret for keeping homemade pizza simple and easy. Using frozen bread dough for homemade pizza crust! It makes for a delicious chewy crust. Brilliant huh?!!
Using frozen dough is a great shortcut. After all the best pizza dough recipe doesn't have to take hours to make!
🗒️ Ingredients
- The crust - Rather than making a homemade pizza dough, I take a shortcut and use Rhodes frozen bread dough, it's an easy shortcut saving you tons of time!
- The sauce - you can make your own pizza sauce (this recipe would be delicious!) or hey... no judgement! If you use store bought sauce, be sure to to buy a good quality.
- The cheese - mozzarella of course! This is not the time to use preshreded cheese. It's dry and doesn't melt well. Don't skimp on the cheese either, pile it on!
- The toppings of choice! I used roasted red peppers, red onions and green peppers, topped with vine rippened fresh tomatoes!
🔪 Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. For the complete directions just scroll down to the bottom!
- Start by thawing the dough - follow the directions on the package. I find it's great to leave it in the refrigerator to thaw overnight then move it to the counter in the morning to allow it to come to room temperature and rise.
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. If you're using a pizza stone preheat it in the oven as well. A preheated pizza stone will make a nice crispy crust.
- Place the dough ball on a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll and stretch the dough and place dough on pizza stone, cookie sheet or pizza pan. I've even used parchment paper on a baking sheet.
- Prick the dough with a fork several times. This will keep the dough from bubbling.
- Brush the crust with olive oil, be sure to hit the edges! Sprinkle with seasoning.
- Bake for 10 minutes.
- After prebaking the crust, build the pie. Add sauce first, then top with shredded cheese and vegetables. Return to the oven and bake for 12-18 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown and the crust is crispy. The baking time will vary depending if you're using a pizza stone or baking sheet.
- Remove from the oven and top with fresh sliced tomatoes!

- Pizza Cutter - it makes slicing the pizza a breeze.
🙋♀️ FAQ's
When using bread dough as your crust, I recommend baking pizza dough at 375 degrees. The baking time will vary if you use a pizza stone or baking sheet. I prefer using a pizza stone.
Yes, this is a thick crust and I recommend pre-baking this crust.
You'll start by pre-baking the crust 10 minutes, add the toppings and bake again for 14-16 minutes.
Pizza can be soggy for several reasons. With a thick crust you'll want make sure you prick the crust with a fork prior to baking, this will eliminate bubbles and help the crust cook more evenly.
If you're adding mushrooms, artichokes or other canned items be sure they are well drained. Blot with a paper towel to remove excess water.
The number one reason your pizza is soggy .... because the oven isn't hot enough!
Variations
What's your favorite toppings? Here are some optional toppings for this easy homemade pizza recipe.
- pepperoni
- black olives
- marinated artichokes
- sausage
- Canadian bacon
- roasted red peppers
- pineapple
- sausage
- parmesan cheese
- Load it up with fresh vegetables - onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes
- and always.... plenty of melty mozzarella cheese!
If you have leftover dough, roll them in thin straws, then in shredded cheese to make cheese sticks!
Tips
Want to make a deep dish pizza instead? Instead of using a pizza stone, use your cast iron skillet. Makes for a yummy crispy crust! Be sure to preheat your cast iron skillet.
Storage
Refrigerate - allow leftovers to cool completely. Wrap in plastic wrap or store in an airtight container and refrigerate. It will last up to three days (or if it's my house... it will disappear in the middle of the night. 🤣)
Reheat - of course, you can reheat it in the microwave, but I prefer to heat it up in the oven on the pizza stove - 375 degrees for about 10 minutes OR use your air fryer - 400 degrees for about three minutes.
🤔 What I've learned
The first time I made pizza at home, I had a real tendency to overload the pizza. When you do this, it can (not always!) make the center of the pizza soggy because it's so thick.
If this happens to you, next time add a few less toppings. In this case, less is more!

Recipe backstory
Pizza was a BIG DEAL when I was a kid and pizza night was popular at our house!
We lived out in the country so it wasn't like we could hop in the car, drive into town and bring home dinner. And delivery? That just didn't happen back then!
I'm dating myself again huh? 😆
Our house was the place all the kids gathered for sleepovers. And New Year's Eve? All the kids from the church would come and the goal of course was to stay up all night long!
Mom and Dad would set up games in the garage. We had a shuffleboard and ping pong table. Dad was the King of ping pong. He could beat everyone.
Mostly because he'd all of us giggling. Then he'd say we weren't enough of a challenge so he'd take off his shoe and use that for a paddle and he'd STILL beat everyone!
True story!
I always wondered why they would want all those kids at their house? Were they gluttons for punishment? Or perhaps they were super smart. They always knew where their children were right? This lasted until we both graduated from High School!
While Dad was in the garage leading the charge, Mom would be in the kitchen making buckets of popcorn and this easy homemade pizza recipe, because who could stay up all night without pizza and popcorn?!!!

Sheri Kasabian says
Does not work. Was unable to stretch and roll the dough into a pizza shape.
Debra Clark says
Unfortunately, Sheri, you probably didn't allow the dough to thaw and proof thoroughly. Once it's warmed up, it becomes pliable and easy to stretch.

Jerry says
This sounds good with the frozen bread though I haven't tried that yet I always brought out the mix master to make my pizza dough. I make my own sauce as well been doing it for 30 plus years but I want to try it with the bread dough as you got here. In my oven I put the lowest rack close to the bottom and I cover the whole bottom rack with what they call Quarry tiles they're about 5 inch squares from my local Menards. It's the same material they make pizza stones with. So I got a huge pizza stone the size of the rack inside the oven! But when I make my pizza I put it at 500° like the pizzerias do. Always turns out crispy. And I use a metal Pizza Peel and I put the pizza on top of parchment paper. Thank you for your recipe here I will use some of it!
