Ingredients you’ll need

You'll only need a handful of simple ingredients. Please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for the exact measurements.

  • red onion
  • strawberries
  • cilantro
  • lime
  • honey
  • jalapeño pepper
  • Sriracha or chili sauce

Step-by-step instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. For complete directions, scroll down to the bottom!

  1. Clean the strawberries, remove the stems and dice, and add to a bowl.
  2. Dice the onion, mince the cilantro and jalapeños (you can use fresh or canned peppers), and add to the bowl with the strawberries.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients and stir well to combine.
  4. Serve and enjoy either as a dip or condiment. This is one terrific salsa!

How to clean strawberries

When you're ready to use the berries, you'll want to make sure they are cleaned well.

  1. Wash them in a vinegar/water solution. One part vinegar to eight parts water. Swish them around well and then rinse them again in cool water.
  2. Next remove the stem. There's lots of fancy contraptions for this but frankly, I use a knife or in a pinch... my thumbnail.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)

What is the BEST way to select ripe strawberries?

Choose plump, red strawberries. Orange or slightly green strawberries will be less sweet. Pick through and discard any spoiled fruit.

Should you leave the stem on when you bring the berries home?

Leave the stem on, and do not wash the berries until you're ready to use them; they will last longer.

Do you refrigerate strawberries when you bring them home?

Yes, refrigerate the berries. Place the berries in the refrigerator in vegetable drawer - the cooler the better!

Can you freeze fruit salsa?

Surprisingly, yes! Cover it tightly, and it will keep in the freezer for up to three months. However, it won't be as bright and pretty as when the fruit is fresh. Freezing breaks down the strawberries and makes them a little mushy.

Essential tools for this recipe

Deb’s tips for the perfect dish

When you bring the strawberries home, place the strawberries right into the fridge. Don't wash them until you're ready to use them!  The key to fresh strawberries is removing moisture and keeping them dry!

Fresh Strawberry salsa is super easy, affordable, and incredibly delicious! It's the perfect balance of sweet and savory. Served with tortilla or corn chips, it's a fabulous appetizer.

OR .....perfect to top lemon pepper chicken or great grilled pork tenderloin - even fabulous over grilled trout!

How to store leftovers

Store leftover salsa in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to three days.

It's fair to say I love strawberries!

More recently though I've been using them as a savory addition to meals - of course they are terrific tossed on a salad, but salsa? Have you tried Strawberry Salsa? Oh my gosh, it's sooo good, in fact Dan says it's addictive!

This looks deliciously wonderful. Love the combination of jalapeno and strawberries. Sweet and spicy is exactly the kind of salsa I like. Isn't it awesome to have fresh strawberries practically in your backyard?

As I said in another comment on your blog - you are so lucky to have access to great fruits and vegetables year round. Our Farmers Markets are only in Summer. I adore this recipe and wish I'd come up with the idea first!!! Ha ha. It truly is beautiful and so well done.

That is high praise coming from you Patty! 😀 And yes, I am so lucky to live here - when I lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota things were much different when the produce had to be shipped hundreds of miles before it was received in our stores. You just cook in a different way - that works too! 😀
