FAQ's

Do tater tots get crispy in the oven?

Yes, when you are baking them on a baking sheet they will get crispy in the oven.

Can I use other types of cheese for this dish?

Yes, you can use any variety of cheese that you like. For best results, make sure the pieces are small and spread out evenly on top of the tater tots.

Should you salt tater tots before or after cooking?

If you want to salt these tater tots, I recommend that you salt them after they bake before you top them.

Deb's tips

  • Make sure that spray your baking dish well with nonstick cooking spray, or you could line your dish with aluminum foil instead.
  • Green onions make a tasty and fresh garnish for this tasty dish. But, you could also top with sour cream or ranch if you are feeling something creamy instead.
  • You really need a baking sheet for best results so that you can get crispy tater tots, but you could use a cast iron skillet instead if needed.

Variations

  • You could also top these with your favorite pizza toppings, such as onion, green bell pepper, or mushrooms instead.
  • If you want to add more protein to this recipe, you can cook up some Italian sausage or ground beef, and spoon the ground beef over the top of the tater tots, or sprinkle some bacon bits over the top.
  • Add a touch of heat by sprinkling some red pepper flakes on top of the dish. I don't recommend using a casserole dish, because you won't get golden brown tater tots that way.

Storage

Refrigerate - Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezer - This casserole does not freeze well. It's best made fresh.

Reheat - For the best results reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 4-5 minutes, or until heated through. Or in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.

I use the Crispy Crowns in place of the tater tots and use the mini pepperoni in place of the regular
