Ingredients you'll need

These are delicious burgers! Please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for the exact measurements.

  • lean ground beef
  • mayonnaise (best foods real mayonnaise is my personal favorite!)
  • bread crumbs I recommend Panko bread crumbs, as they lighten up the burgers.
  • packet of Onion Soup Mix
  • Swiss cheese slices, mozzarella cheese, Colby jack cheese, etc.
  • Hamburger buns or brioche buns - use your favorite!
  • all your favorite toppings - sliced tomatoes, onions, mayonnaise, ketchup, etc.

Creative variations to try

  • In place of the onion soup mix, you can use beefy onion soup mix or dry ranch seasoning mix for your burgers.
  • A splash of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce can be added to this mixture for a deep flavor.
  • Instead of using ground beef, you could also use ground turkey or ground chicken.
  • Topping with sautéed mushrooms or top these burgers with caramelized onions for a sweet and deep flavor.
  • If you want to increase the flavor of these burgers you can add, a dash of garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, or crushed red pepper flakes.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)

What is the best meat for burgers?

I prefer to use ground chuck when I am making burgers. I've found that it sticks together well and turns out nice and juicy every time.

What is Lipton Onion Soup made of?

Lipton Soup is made from a mix of dehydrated onions, salt, sugar, cornstarch, vegetable bouillon (hydrolyzed soy and corn protein, autolyzed yeast extract, maltodextrin), spices, dehydrated garlic, and disodium inosinate & guanylate.

Do I have to use mayonnaise in this recipe?

No, you don't have to use mayonnaise. You could substitute with an equal amount of plain Greek yogurt if you would like.

Deb's tips for the best burger

Do not over-mix the meat when adding the seasonings. Mix until combined so you don't end up with tough burgers.

Here are my favorite easy tips to make this homemade beef burger recipe even better!

  • Use your thumb to press down into the center of your beef patties before cooking. This will help them to cook evenly and not puff up in the middle.
  • For evenly sized burger patties you can use a burger patty press. Or, you can weigh out the meat into even-sized balls.

How to store leftovers

Refrigerate - leftover burgers/cooked burgers will stay fresh for 3-4 days in the fridge, in an airtight container.

Freezer - cooked burgers can be frozen for up to 2 months. Let cool completely then place in a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Reheating - Reheat in the oven on a baking sheet at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes, or until heated through. Or, reheat in the microwave covered for 1 minute then in 30-second intervals until heated through.

I have to say I've never even thought of putting mayonnaise IN the burger instead of on the bun. Has to help keep them from being dry. My husband only eats mayo if he doesn't know it. Definitely going to try this recipe.
