FAQ's

What country invented kielbasa and cabbage?

Kielbasa and cabbage is a popular dish in many European countries, but it's most closely associated with Poland.

Can I use red cabbage instead of green cabbage?

I think that green cabbage tastes best, however, red cabbage can be used instead.  You could even use savoy cabbage if you want!

Can I use cole slaw mix instead of chopping my own cabbage?

Yes, you can use cole slaw mix instead. However, because it's a thinner cut you will need to reduce the cooking time by a few minutes.

Deb's tips

  • I recommend using a heavy-bottomed skillet like a cast iron skillet to get the best crust in this recipe.
  • When you are picking out a head of green cabbage look for one that is firm and heavy for its size, with bright green leaves.
  • To make this Kielbasa and Cabbage Skillet even heartier try adding some of your favorite vegetables such as bell peppers or potatoes. However, you will need to cook them slightly before adding them to this meal.

Variations

  • You can use any kielbasa for this simple recipe. I like to use polish sausage but you can use beef kielbasa or turkey kielbasa instead. Just pick your family's favorite.
  • If you don't have beef stock on hand, you can use chicken broth or chicken stock instead.
  • If you like your food a bit spicier, feel free to add more red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
  • Add a little more flavor to this recipe by adding a dash of red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or Dijon mustard for a little tang.
  • A teaspoon of caraway seeds would add a great flavor as well!
  • If you aren't watching your carbs turn this into a full meal by stirring a couple of cups of cooked and drained egg noodles into the finished dish. Or tender potatoes, they go so well with this dish!

Storage

Refrigerate - To keep the leftovers fresh, store them in an airtight container up to four days. The flavors will continue to develop the next day making it a great choice for meal prepping!

Freezer - You can freeze the leftovers in a freezer-safe container for up to three months.

Reheat -  When you're ready to eat, place the kielbasa cabbage skillet in a non-stick skillet on medium heat with a little butter and reheat until warm. You can also microwave for about 2 minutes or until warmed through.
