What makes this recipe irresistible

It's a family favorite of course! This legendary green bean casserole is always gobbled up quickly when it's served on Christmas or Thanksgiving day. It has long been a must-make recipe during the whole holiday season!

It's the creamy, crunchy combination. The crunchy green bean bake is one of my favorite side dishes. It's easy-to-make for any holiday meal!

Ingredients for the classic green bean casserole recipe.

Ingredients you’ll need

For the exact measurements, please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • This classic recipe uses canned green beans - though you can use frozen green beans or fresh, you'll just want to blanch them for 3 minutes before adding them to the casserole dish.
  • Campbell's cream of mushroom soup - you can substitute other canned soup like cream of celery soup or cream or chicken soup. They would work as well, but it would not give you those classic flavors.
  • Evaporated milk - heavy cream, half and half or even whole milk would work!
  • Soy sauce and black pepper for additional flavor.
  • French-fried onions - I use store-bought, but if you'd like make your own crunchy fried onions, try this recipe!

Creative variations to try

  • Add in fresh mushrooms, mmm! I like to reserve a handful of sliced sautéed mushrooms to top the casserole.
  • For the cheese lovers out there, top with a cup of shredded cheese. We love sharp white cheddar cheese - it's delicious!
  • Crumbled bacon mixed with fried onions is fantastic.
This is the perfect side dish for any holiday meal.

Campbells green bean casserole recipe can be assembled ahead of time. However. don't add the fried onions until you are ready to bake it.

  • For easy clean-up after Thanksgiving dinner, use a disposable foil pan to make this dish.
  • If you are using frozen green beans be sure to steam or blanche being added them to your casserole dish. Additionally, you may need to add more seasonings if you are using frozen green beans.

Have been hosting Thanksgiving for over 40 years now and make this classic green bean casserole year after year in the same old vintage corning ware casserole dish. This is the only vegetable side dish that the grandkids will actually eat with the crispy canned onions on the top. Happy Thanksgiving!
