Why you'll love this recipe

Baked beans are my go-to side dish for summer cookouts and parties. And, the addition of ground beef makes this dish even more hearty, I always get rave reviews when I serve it to my family and friends!

All of the ingredients needed to make the recipe. With print overlay for clarification.

Ingredients/variations

Please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for the exact measurements.

  • Lean ground beef - Want to make it a little healthier? Use ground turkey instead of beef.
  • Bacon - Leftover ham or diced ham taste great in this casserole. Sliced hot dogs are great too!
  • yellow onion or white onions
  • bell pepper diced (any color you prefer)
  • Montreal steak seasoning
  • ketchup
  • brown sugar
  • Yellow mustard - Only have Dijon mustard? It will still work well in this recipe, however it will change the taste slightly.
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Barbecue sauce - Sweet Baby Ray's is my preferred brand, feel free to use your favorite.
  • Canned baked beans - Homemade baked beans can be used as well. But, I think canned is so much easier. And you know me, I'm all about the easy!

FAQ's

Do you drain canned baked beans?

No, you want to keep the sauce as is, packed with flavor, so don't drain your baked beans.

A stack of bowls. The top one is filled with baked beans.

Top Tip

Want extra tender ground beef? My favorite way to make it tender is by adding a little water to your skillet to help soften the meat and break it apart while it cooks.

  • An easy way to remove excess grease from your ground beef is to use a pair of tongs and run a paper towel inside your skillet to soak up the grease.
  • Sometimes I like to take this casserole up a notch by topping it with freshly shredded cheddar cheese for the last 15 minutes of the cooking time.

Storage

Refrigerate -Store leftover baked beans in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.

Freezer - I've found the best way to freeze this casserole is by letting it come to room temperature and then moving it to a freezer-safe container or wrapping your casserole is plastic wrap and then foil. Thaw in the fridge overnight.

Reheat - One of my favorite things about baked beans is that they taste even better the next day. Reheat single servings in the microwave for 1-2 minutes or reheat the entire casserole in a preheated 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes,
