Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)
Yes, you can use other types of rice such as jasmine, long-grain white rice, or even brown rice. The key is to use day-old rice as it’s less sticky and better for frying.
This is a great time to use leftovers. For instance, if you had leftover teriyaki steak that would go perfectly in this dish. You could also use chicken, pork or shrimp.
While fresh rice can be used, day-old rice is recommended as it’s drier and results in better texture for fried rice.
Deb's tips for the perfect dish
Make sure you prep the ingredients prior to cooking. Have everything beside you at the stove. It only takes 10 minutes to make this dish!
- Use a large wok or fry pan.
- You want your pan HOT.
How to store leftovers
Refrigerate - Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freezer - I don't recommend freezing the fried rice, it gets too dry.
Reheat - Reheat in a skillet over medium heat, adding a splash of soy sauce or water to prevent drying out.

- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil divided
- 4 tablespoon soy sauce divided
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 2 teaspoon roasted sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 medium onion diced
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 3 cups cooked basmati rice
- 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables peas, corn, carrots
- 1 egg
- Green onion for garnish
Instructions
- Cut the sirloin steak into small cubes. In a mixing bowl, combine the steak with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, the hoisin sauce, sesame oil and garlic powder. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes.
- Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add one tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the diced onion. Sauté until fragrant and the onions are translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from the skillet and place in a large bowl.

- Add the frozen mixed vegetables to the skillet. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are heated through.
- Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add a bit more oil if needed, and crack the egg into the empty side of the skillet. Scramble the egg until fully cooked, then mix it with the vegetables.
- Add the cooked rice to the skillet, breaking up any clumps with your spatula. Return the steak and onions to the skillet. Pour in the remaining soy sauce and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Stir well to combine everything and heat through about 3-5 minutes.
- Remove from heat, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve hot.
