Why you'll love this recipe
Sloppy Joe's were one of Mom's go-to favorites. They were great for anytime we needed a quick bite or friends were over. This is the meal she would make! Now I make it because it's perfect for game day or snack time. And like the Ground Turkey Sliders (so good!) they make a great dinner on busy nights.
Ingredients
Please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for the exact measurements.
- Lean ground beef - Ground turkey works well in this recipe just brown it the same as you would the beef. However, you may want to add some olive oil to your skillet to prevent the meat from sticking.
- Bell pepper - You can use any color of bell pepper for this recipe. I prefer to use green pepper or red pepper for a little pop of color.
- yellow onion
- Montreal steak seasoning
- Manwich sloppy joe sauce - If you are not a fan of canned sauce, you can switch it out and use this homemade sloppy joe sauce instead.
- Hawaiian butter rolls or any small slider rolls.
- Mozzarella cheese - cheddar cheese or pepper jack cheese.
- butter
- Italian seasoning
Instructions
This is an overview of the instructions. For complete directions, scroll down to the bottom.
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lightly spray the bottom of the casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray. This will help crisp up the bottom of the sliders.
- Dice the onion and bell pepper into a half-inch dice.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the diced bell peppers and onions. Seasoning with the Montreal steak seasoning. Brown until no longer pink. Drain well.
- Add the sloppy joe sauce, and mix together to combine.
- Using a large serrated knife, slice the rolls in half so you have a ‘slab’ of tops and a ‘slab’ of bottoms. Do not separate the rolls or slice them individually. They should stay connected.
- Place the bottom half of the rolls in the bottom of the casserole dish. Spoon the meat mixture over the top and spread evenly. Sprinkle with shredded cheese. Add the top slab of rolls.
- Melt one teaspoon of butter. Brush the top of the sliders with butter. Finish by sprinkling with Italian seasoning.
- Cover with foil, place in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove foil for the last 2-3 minutes so the tops of the rolls are golden brown. Serve and enjoy!

FAQ's
No, while they make look similar they are not the same thing. Sloppy Joes have a sweeter sauce and are made for buns.
Manwich is just a brand name for canned sloppy joe sauce that you can use to save a little time in the kitchen.
Loose meat sandwiches are just sandwiches made with chopped ground beef. Whereas sloppy joes are made with ground beef and a sweet sauce.
Top Tip
I recommend using a glass or ceramic baking dish so that the sliders do not overcook the bottom.
- Drain the excess grease from theat the beef well so th sauce is not overly greasy.
- Are you a fan of really cheesy sloppy joe sliders? If so, add some cheese to the bottom and top of the sloppy joe mixture for more flavor.
- Are you looking to increase the flavor of the Manwich? You can jazz it up by adding a few dashes of garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
Storage
Refrigerate - Store the leftovers of these little sandwiches in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.
Freezer - You can freeze the ground beef mixture in a freezer-safe bag for up three months. However, I don't recommend freezing the assembled sandwiches.
Reheat - For the best taste, I recommend reheating the sandwiches in the oven at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until warm all the way through.
