Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)

Do you have to brown the chicken before putting it in a crock pot?

This recipe does not require you to brown the chicken. Having said that, browning it will add another layer of flavor!

Does chicken get more tender the longer you slow-cook it?

Yes, slow cooker is a great way to cook chicken. It will help the chicken tenderize. It's better to cook on low (rather than high) in the crockpot. Chicken is done when the internal temperature is 165 degrees.

Can I use any type of stuffing?

I like to use the chicken dry stuffing mix, but you could also use sage, cornbread, or even turkey stuffing.

Deb's top tips

Want easy cleanup? Use a slow cooker liner instead of spraying your crock with cooking spray.

  • If you have a newer crock pot they tend to cook a little hotter and faster than the older models, so check for doneness of the chicken around the 5-6 hour mark so that they don't overcook.
  • A sprinkle of fresh parsley or even a dollop of sour cream makes a great garnish for this easy recipe.

Creative variations to try

  • For a little extra flavor, you can add a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the chicken in the last 10-15 minutes of the cooking time. (This is a great flavor boost!)
  • Feel free to get creative with the seasoning for your chicken, poultry seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, or your favorite all purpose seasoning will work great for this simple recipe.
  • Want to change up the protein? You can use turkey tenderloin or even a few pork chops for this recipe.

How to store leftovers

Refrigerate - Store leftover crockpot chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Freezer -  Cooked chicken can also be frozen for up to 2-3 months. Just make sure to cool it completely before freezing in an airtight container or bag.

Reheat - Reheat the entire dish in a casserole dish in a 350 degree preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or individual servings can be reheated in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. If you find that your stuffing is drying out, add a small splash of chicken broth or water to moisten it back up.
