Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)
Rigatoni bolognese is a hearty dish made with ground beef, sausage, and vegetables in a tomato sauce. The sauce is then simmered with rigatoni pasta until tender.
Bolognese is a meat-based sauce that originates from Bologna, Italy. The sauce is typically made with ground beef, pork, or a combination of the two.
The best pasta for Bolognese is a short, thick pasta like rigatoni or penne. The sauce clings to the pasta nicely and the hearty sauce is the perfect match for a sturdier pasta.
No, do not precook the pasta! There's no need to cook the pasta. This is a one-pot meal and everything cooks together. That's the beauty of this AMAZING meal!
Deb’s tips for the perfect dish
Be sure to scrape the bottom of the pot well with a wooden spoon or spatula to get all the brown bits off the bottom when you add the broth. Those brown bits are flavor!
- Chop the vegetables into even-sized portions so that they cook evenly.
- Of course you can make your own marinara sauce if you'd prefer.
- Garnish with fresh basil, fresh parsley, or additional grated parmesan cheese.
- If you are cooking with very lean ground beef, you can add a little olive oil to the bottom of your saucepan to prevent the beef and sausage from sticking to the bottom.
How to store leftovers
Refrigerate - Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Freezer - This dish freezes well. To freeze, place the cooled pasta and sauce in a freezer bag or airtight container. Freeze for up to 3 months.
Reheat - Reheat on the stove over low heat until warmed through. Or in the microwave, heat in 30-second increments until warmed through.
Repurpose your leftovers
Turn your leftovers into a casserole by adding it to a baking dish and topping with shredded mozzarella cheese. Cover with foil, then place in the oven at 350 degrees until the cheese melts.
If your pasta seems dry, add ½ to 1 cup of tomato sauce. Stir it together and top it with a little more parmesan cheese.
Hmmm.... you may want to double the recipe so you have a casserole to freeze!
