FAQ's

What does butterscotch go well with?

This dessert is great on its own, or try it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Butterscotch also pairs well with other classic flavors like chocolate, caramel, and pecans.

Why butterscotch is called butterscotch?

The name butterscotch is thought to be a combination of the words u0022butteru0022 and u0022scorch,u0022 referring to the process of making the candy.

Are caramel and butterscotch the same?

The main difference between the two is that butterscotch is made with brown sugar, while the caramel is made with white sugar.

What is the difference between butterscotch and toffee?

Toffee generally does not include brown sugar as an ingredient and brown sugar is usually found in butterscotch. The candy is also cooked at a higher temperature, making it harder and less pliable than butterscotch.

Things to know

  • Instead of using the microwave to melt the butterscotch chips, you can use a double-boiler on the stovetop over medium heat to melt them. Just make sure that you stir often so they stick and scorch on the bottom.
  • If you want a stronger butterscotch flavor, you can add butterscotch extract in place of the vanilla extract.
  • If you do not top the pudding with cool whip right away, place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pudding to keep a film from forming on the stoop.
  • Make sure that the chips are completely melted before you add in the remaining ingredients so that you have a smooth pudding.
  • Drizzling with caramel sauce or butterscotch sauce makes it over-the-top amazing!

Variations

  • Instead of making homemade whipped cream, you can omit that step, and top with Cool Whip instead.
  • Turn this into a layered butterscotch pudding dessert by adding graham cracker crumbs to the bottom of the cup. Add a little pudding and another layer of crumbs. Alternate and top with whipped cream. You'll love the creamy layers - yum!
  • Add some tang to your dessert by adding softened cream cheese to the whipped cream mixture.
  • Or add graham cracker crumbs on the bottom. Then add a cream cheese layer, mmm!! Place the cream cheese mixture on the bottom then add a creamy butterscotch pudding layer on top. Wouldn't that be lovely?!!
  • You can make this dessert chocolate by using milk chocolate chips instead of butterscotch chips.
  • Turn this into a butterscotch pie by using a buttery graham cracker crust! Make your own simple graham cracker crust using regular honey graham crackers or cinnamon graham crackers.

Storage

Refrigerate - This pudding must be stored in the fridge and will last up to 3 days.

Freezer - I don't recommend freezing this butterscotch dessert, as it may separate when thawed.
