FAQ's
This loaf of bread is a dense bread with tender crumb that has a slightly nutty flavor along with a tang for a great taste.
The main difference is that Irish bread uses whole wheat flour, and traditional soda bread uses white flour and buttermilk.
Top Tip
This is a sticky dough, so if you find that it is sticking to your wooden spoon give the spoon with nonstick cooking spray.
- If you don't have a pie plate you can use a cast iron skillet, or small Dutch oven lined with parchment paper to bake your bread.
- I've found brushing the top of the bread with melted butter adds wonderful flavor.
- Overmixing the bread dough can give you tough soda bread, so make sure that you mix it until just combined. A few lumps are ok!
- I've made a lot of easy bread recipes over the years, and the one thing that I've found is that the easiest way to cut it is to allow the loaf of bread to cool completely and then use a serrated knife or bread knife to cut slices.
Variations
- Want a little extra flare on top of your bread? Sprinkle a few caraway seeds on top of the dough before you bake the bread for a beautiful topping.
- Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife before baking to create a traditional cross shape.
- If you want a sweeter bread, add some currants, raisins or craisins to the dough before baking.
Storage
Storage - Store fresh bread in an airtight container or storage bag at room temperature for 2-3 days.
Freezer - I don't recommend freezing the bread, it dries it out.
Reheating - To reheat bread slices, place them in the microwave for 15-20 minutes or heat in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 3-5 minutes.

I haven't tried this bread yet but I will using your recipe but I love orange cranberry bread. I want to alter this recipe could I use orange juice instead of evaporated milk and rehydrate some cranberries. Your opinion if you think juice instead of milk would work.
Debra Clark says
Jean, orange cranberry bread sounds amazing!! I think you'd need to do something else, though. I would probably still use the milk but reduce to half a cup, add an egg and then add grated orange peel. Grate the orange part (not the white pith) and I think the orange peel will have a ton of flavor. Let me know how it turns out for you, ok?
Jean says
Thank you. I will try it and let you know.
Debra Clark says
Another idea too Jean would be to plump the craisins in OJ. That would add a lot of flavor!
