Step-by-step instructions to make the Halloween treat. With print overlay.

Instructions

This is an overview of the instructions. For complete directions, scroll down to the bottom.

  1. Line a cookie or baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Very gently insert the cake pop stick into the Reese’s cups.
  3. Melt the candy wafers in a mixing bowl and stir until smooth.
  4. Add the vegetable oil to the melted wafers and mix thoroughly.
  5. While firmly holding the stick, completely submerge the Reese’s cup into the melted candy. Allow the excess to drip off into the bowl. Set the covered Reese’s onto the parchment paper and set for 20-30 minutes or until the candy has hardened.
  6. Carefully push the paper straw onto the cake pop stick.
  7. Using the edible ink marker, draw Jack’s mouth, adding smaller lines to resemble stitches.
  8. Use the cookie icing to make two large eyes and a nose. Trace the mouth curve, but leave the “stitches” as they are.
  9. Attach the bats to the top of the straw just below Jack’s face using a dot of the remaining cookie icing.
  10. Set for 1-2 hours at room temperature to allow the icing to harden.

FAQ's

Can I store these in the fridge?

No, due to the cookie icing on top of these sweet treats, I don't recommend that you chill them.  The food coloring will run and make a big mess.

Should I use Halloween Reese's peanut butter cups?

You don't have to use Halloween peanut butter cups, regular ones will work just fine as well.

Test kitchen tips

  • Use a gentle hand to insert the cake pop stick into your peanut butter cup, they can break through the peanut butter mixture easily and rip.
  • If you are using chocolate instead of candy melts you may need to add coconut oil or vegetable shortening to keep your chocolate smooth.
  • This is a great way to use leftover Halloween Candy. I don't know about you but I could watch The Nightmare Before Christmas any day of the year!!
  • If you don't use the cake pop stick, store these in fun Halloween foils or cupcake liners. Then they are easy to grab from the dessert tray without touching the others!

Variations

  • Instead of using white candy melts, you could also make these with different types of melted chocolate such as dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips. However, they will have a different look to them and they will not look like Jack Skellington.
  • You could also great creative and use your favorite candy instead of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Kit Kat, Snickers, and Milky Way would all work great and you can find them all on the Halloween candy aisles together while you are at the store.
  • If you want to add a little crunch try using the peanut butter cups with Reese's pieces inside. I love the added texture!
  • Instead of hand drawing the eye of every monster you can use candy eyes instead if you want to save a little time. Just "glue" them on with a little of the cookie icing.

Storage

Storage - Store these Halloween peanut butter cups in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Make sure that you keep them away from heat sources so that they do not melt.
