Crockpot steak and potatoes

Everyone always asks me... do I brown the steak first? I say nope! There's no need to. They they ask... are you sure? Yes, I'm sure! I've made this more times than I can count. Just throw everything in the slow cooker and let it do its thing.

I love it because it's a complete meal in one pot. No need to worry about side dishes, this recipe has you covered. The steak comes out nice and tender after cooking all day in the crockpot.

Ingredients you'll need

For the exact measurements for the slow-cooker steak recipe, please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • The best cuts of beef are top sirloin steak, round steak or cube steak. If you'd prefer, you could even use a pot roast or even stew meat.
  • An envelope of brown gravy mix and an envelope of onion soup mix.
  • Baby potatoes - or if you have large or medium potatoes, cut potatoes into 2 inch pieces.
  • Beef broth or beef stock for the most flavor, or you can substitute with a cup of water
  • Butter, not margarine.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds top sirloin steak or round steak
  • .87 ounce brown gravy mix that's one packet
  • 1 ounce onion soup mix one envelope
  • 1 pound baby potatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  • Spray crockpot with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Place steak in the slow cooker. Add potatoes and pour in beef stock.
  • Sprinkle with Lipton onion soup mixture and beef gravy packet.
  • Top with butter.
  • Cover and cook on low 7-8 hours or on high 3-4 hours.

Notes

Although we use sirloin steak in this recipe, you can use cube steak, ribeye steak, flat iron steak, etc.

Storage and reheating

Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days in an airtight container. I don't recommend freezing this recipe as steak can become tough and the potatoes mushy when reheated.
Reheat - To reheat, simply remove from the fridge and heat in a pot on the stove over medium heat until warmed through.

My cooking skills are not the best, but this recipe looked like even I could do it … and I did! The first time I did a slow cook, the second time the 3 to 4 hours on high. My preference was the 7 to 8 hours, as the gravy was thicker and meat more tender. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

I'm using six 7oz sirloin steaks. Would 8 hours on low still work?

Hey Doris - because you're almost doubling the amount of meat, I'd plan for 10 hours. Are you doubling the amount of potatoes and vegetables also? If so be sure and add additional seasoning as well. Enjoy the recipe!

I'm making this but I didn't have onion soup but had a pkg of the mushroom lipton soup. So I'm using it. Also russet potatoes but I cut them in quarters so they'd cook and. Be done by supper time.
Sure smells wonderful. Thank you 😊

When cutting the potatoes into 2 inch cubes, do I need to peel the potatoes? Also, are you using frozen steak? If using frozen steaks do you recommend dethawing first or how do you adjust the time for a frozen steak?

I used red and yukon gold potatoes and did not peel them. If you're using russet potatoes you may want to peel them, but it's totally your choice. This recipe does not use frozen steak. If your steak is frozen I'd defrost it overnight in the refrigerator. If you increase the cooking time for the frozen steak there's a good chance the potatoes will turn to mush. Just plan accordingly and you'll be set! Enjoy the recipe Jennifer!

The steak in the photo looks nice and brown. Is that just from being in the slow cooker or was it seared first? Thanks.
