FAQ's
Yes, you can certainly put raw steak in a slow cooker. In fact, it comes out nice and tender.
It usually takes about 7-8 hours on low or 3-4 hours on high.
No, you don't need to brown the steak first. Just throw it in the crockpot and let it cook all day! You can brown it first in a large skillet if you prefer, but it's not a requirement.
Yes, it's possible to overcook steak in a crockpot. So make sure to check on it periodically and take it out when it's cooked to your liking.
I usually use top sirloin steak or round steak for this recipe. But any kind of steak will work.
Things to know
- For easy clean-up, spray your slow cooker well with nonstick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner.
- I like to use baby potatoes in this recipe, but you can certainly use regular-sized ones instead. Just cut them into two inch pieces. Any smaller and they will be soft and fall apart.
- If you don't have beef broth, you can use water or beef stock instead.
- Thicken the gravy after cooking this crock pot recipe, by adding a cornstarch slurry or moving the gravy to a small saucepan and letting it simmer on the stove.
- I prefer to cook this slow cooker steak recipe on low heat instead of high because I find the beef becomes more tender.
Variations
- If you want to add more flavor to this recipe, you can place fresh onion in the bottom of the crockpot before you add the meat.
- You can also add flavor to this simple recipe by adding minced garlic cloves, garlic powder, steak seasoning, or Worcestershire sauce.
- A splash or two of red wine would add a deep and rich flavor to this simple recipe.
- Make this meal even heartier by adding your favorite vegetables like celery, bell peppers, and carrots.
- A can of cream of mushroom soup will add some creaminess to the sauce.
- Cubed sweet potatoes can be used in place of baby potatoes.
- Add a little heat with chili powder, cayenne pepper, or crushed red pepper flakes.
Storage
Refrigerate - Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 4 days in an airtight container.
Freezer - I don't recommend freezing this recipe as steak can become tough and the potatoes mushy when reheated.
Reheat - To reheat, simply remove from the fridge and heat in a pot on the stove over medium heat until warmed through.

Lynne Erickson says
My cooking skills are not the best, but this recipe looked like even I could do it … and I did! The first time I did a slow cook, the second time the 3 to 4 hours on high. My preference was the 7 to 8 hours, as the gravy was thicker and meat more tender. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Debra Clark says
That's my preference as well. Thanks for sharing Lynne, it's so great to have your feedback!
DKB says
I'm using six 7oz sirloin steaks. Would 8 hours on low still work?
Bowl Me Over says
Hey Doris - because you're almost doubling the amount of meat, I'd plan for 10 hours. Are you doubling the amount of potatoes and vegetables also? If so be sure and add additional seasoning as well. Enjoy the recipe!

Brittany says
I love using my crockpot, especially for all-in-one meals like steak and potatoes!
Cynthia Rusincovitch says
I'm all about easy weeknight dinners. And we are definitely a steak and potatoes family. Can you use stew-cut beef for this? Or do you think it would cook up weird?
Bowl Me Over says
Hey Cynthia - you can definitely use stew meat for this recipe. It will be tender and moist. I prefer the quality of sirloin steak especially though. Just something to consider!
Kristen Yard says
I love the way my kitchen smells when I make steak and potatoes in my Crock Pot! Plus, it comes out so well--the juiciest steak, and fluffy, tender potatoes. 10/10!!!

Does the stock need to be covering the steak and potatoes? Cuz mine isn’t!
Bowl Me Over says
No, you're good LaDara. The stock doesn't need to cover it. Enjoy dinner tonight!!
Debbie says
Can I use beefy onion soup mix if don’t have French onion mix?
Bowl Me Over says
Yes, an envelope of the beefy onion soup mix should be delicious in this recipe. Enjoy Deb!
Debbie says

Camille says
I made this today and followed the recipe perfectly. It came out so good. It was delicious. My husband loved it. It is definitely a keeper. Thank you!
Jennifer says
When cutting the potatoes into 2 inch cubes, do I need to peel the potatoes? Also, are you using frozen steak? If using frozen steaks do you recommend dethawing first or how do you adjust the time for a frozen steak?
Bowl Me Over says
I used red and yukon gold potatoes and did not peel them. If you're using russet potatoes you may want to peel them, but it's totally your choice. This recipe does not use frozen steak. If your steak is frozen I'd defrost it overnight in the refrigerator. If you increase the cooking time for the frozen steak there's a good chance the potatoes will turn to mush. Just plan accordingly and you'll be set! Enjoy the recipe Jennifer!
Lauren says
Can you use ribeye instead?
Bowl Me Over says
Of course! Oh my gosh Lauren, rib eye would be AMAZING! Enjoy the recipe!
Jessica Ernst says
Excited about this recipe and it’s all in the crockpot now..Do I need to add salt?
Bowl Me Over says
I'm sorry Jessica, I've been traveling out of the country and just saw your question. I'm sorry for the delay. This recipe doesn't require any extra salt. Cook as directed and add salt to taste at the end. (and just a note, I've never added any).
Diana says
The steak in the photo looks nice and brown. Is that just from being in the slow cooker or was it seared first? Thanks.
Bowl Me Over says
It's just from being in the crockpot. It was not browned prior.
Jane says
Hi, would pan searing the steaks prior to placing in the slow cooker be ok? Or would that change the outcome. Thanks
Bowl Me Over says
No, that's a great addition. It will add more flavor to the meat.
Ashley says
Hi!! Does the steak come out well done? Or is there pink? Thank you!
Bowl Me Over says
It will be well done Ashley, enjoy the recipe!
Lyndsey Rullman says

Hi. Can I use can or jar gravy if I do not have a packet?
Bowl Me Over says
It needs to be a packet.
Kim S. says
I had everything else on hand but I didn't have a brown gravy packet so I used a can of thick brown gravy and cut back on the broth. It still came out really good!
Bowl Me Over says
Fantastic! Great substitutions Kim. We just love this crockpot steak recipe. Glad it was a hit with you as well!
