No, stew meat is typically larger chunks of beef that are meant to be braised or slow-cooked, while steak bites are smaller, bite-sized pieces of steak that can be quickly cooked on a stovetop or grill.
Yes, it is possible to overcook steak in a slow cooker. However, it takes awhile to do so, just follow the cooking time I've outlined and you will have a great meal.
Test kitchen tips
- For easy clean spray your slow cooker vessel with nonstick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner.
- I've found that the best way to get tender bites of steak in the slow cooker is to cook them on low for 6-8 hours. However, if you are in a hurry you can also cook them on high for 3-4 hours.
- Fresh parsley works great as a garnish for this easy recipe, however, if you enjoy a little onion flavor you can also top it with a sprinkle of sliced green onions.
- If you are feeling a little adventurous you can heat a small amount of olive oil in a large skillet and sear the beef tips on all sides before adding them to the slow cooker. This will give them a great flavor, but it's completely optional.
Variations
- Can't find steak tips or stew beef in your grocery store? Purchase a chuck roast and cut it into chunks for this mouthwatering dish.
- Do you enjoy adding extra seasonings? You can garlic powder, onion powder, or even a little cumin to this dish.
- If you want a thicker gravy, mix in a cornstarch slurry (equal parts cornstarch and water) during the last 30 minutes of cooking. This will help thicken the sauce and give it a richer texture.
- Also, you can add a rich flavor to your delicious gravy by adding a dash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to the gravy mixture.
- For a thinner gravy that packs an extra punch of flavor swap out one of the brown gravy packets for an au jus gravy mix. Though, I prefer the two brown gravy packets.
- Does your entire family love a touch of heat in their meals? You can add a pinch or two of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to take the heat level up a notch.
Storage
Refrigerate - If you manage to have some left after all, you can store leftover steak bites in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Freezer - You can freeze the leftovers in a freezer-safe bag for up to three months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
Reheat - To reheat these crockpot steak bites, place them in a skillet with a little bit of oil over medium heat until heated through. You can also reheat them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
