FAQ's

What is Jezebel Sauce?

Jezebel sauce is a sweet spicy condiment popular in Southern cuisine. It is typically made with a base of fruit preserves, mixed with horseradish, mustard, and sometimes other ingredients like vinegar or hot sauce.

What should the internal temperature of the chicken be?

Use an instant-read meat thermometer to make sure that your chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. However, make sure to check the temperature in the thickest part of the chicken for accurate results.

Where did the name come from?

It's unknown where the name comes from, though Legend has it that Jezebel was a firey queen so it's no wonder why the dish is so juicy and flavourful!

Can I make this chicken ahead?

If you are in a hurry prep the ingredients in advance.

Test kitchen tips

  • I used bone-in chicken thighs however, you can use boneless thighs or breasts instead. You will need to adjust the cooking time to suit your protein choice.
  • Cover your skillet with aluminum foil while the chicken is in the oven to prevent it from drying out.
  • Garnish this easy recipe with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for a bright flavor, or a sprinkle of fresh parsley for a pop of color.
  • Pour the sweet sauce left in your skillet into a small bowl and use it as a dipping sauce for your chicken.

Variations

  • This tasty sauce will also work well on pork chops or even skin-on chicken leg quarters. However, you will need to adjust the cooking time depending on the meat that you are using.
  • For a different twist on this chicken dish try using peach preserves or pineapple preserves in place of the apricot.
  • For extra flavor in your sauce, you can use mustard powder, grainy mustard, black pepper, or fresh herbs to suit your tastes.
  • Adding a splash of soy sauce to this classic fruity-sweet southern jezebel sauce will give you a deeper and richer flavor.
  • When you saute the shallot, you could also add some sliced red onion to add even more deliciousness to this southern dish.

Storage

Refrigerate - Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. I like to use a glass container with a tight fitting lid, however a storage bag would work as well.

Freezer -  If you want to store the chicken longer, it can be frozen for up to 3 months. When ready to use, defrost in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Reheat - The best way to reheat leftovers is in a 350°F oven for 15-20 minutes or until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. But, if your chicken starts to dry out, add a splash of chicken broth to moisten it back up.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 bone-in chicken thighs or 4 chicken breasts I used skinless chicken
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 shallot finely chopped
  • 1-2 cloves garlic finely minced
  • ¼ cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish sauce
  • ½ cup apricot jam
  • 4 green onions sliced, divided

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Sprinkle chicken with seasonings.
  • In large cast iron skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat; brown chicken for 2-3 minutes each side. Remove from pan, reserving drippings.
  • In the same pan, saute the shallot and garlic in the pan drippings over medium heat until the garlic becomes fragrant.
  • Stir in apricot jam, broth, horseradish sauce and half of the green onions.
  • Nestle the chicken into the sauce. Cover the skillet and place in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes. The chicken is done when an instant-read thermometer reads 165 degrees.
  • Serve the chicken with the sauce spooned over the top. Top with remaining green onions. Enjoy!

Notes

I used bone-in, skinless chicken. I prefer bone-in for flavor. If you use skin-on chicken, the skin won't stay crispy because the casserole dish is covered.
If you don't have an oven-safe skillet, you can pour the sauce into a casserole dish and cover with foil instead.

What do you mean by horseradish sauce? Horseradish cream sauce or horseradish in vinegar?

At our store it's called horseradish sauce, horseradish cream sauce would be the same thing. Enjoy the casserole!
