FAQ's

What’s the best type of frozen fries to use in cheesy hamburger casserole?

I prefer frozen crinkle cut fries because I like how they look, but shoestring fries, leftover french fries and even curly fries work just as well.

Do I need to thaw frozen French fries?

Nope! There’s no need to thaw your fries before spreading them on top of the ground beef mixture.

Top Tip

To get nice, crispy fries, you need to arrange them in a single layer on top of the cheese. Overlapping fries won’t crisp up quite as well.

  • Grease your casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray so the casserole doesn’t stick and burn.
  • If you use lean ground beef, add a tablespoon of olive oil to your skillet before browning the meat and onion over medium-high heat.
  • Drain the excess grease from the cooked ground beef before combining the meat with the other ingredients so your casserole won't taste oily.
  • You can sprinkle cheese on top of the fries during the last 5-10 minutes of baking. Who doesn't love extra cheese?!
  • Top your casserole with chopped green onions, shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, pickles, bacon bits, sour cream, or extra ketchup and mustard to give it that "burger" feel!

Variations

  • Feel free to substitute the French fries with frozen tater tots.
  • Use my simple Montreal Steak Seasoning Recipe—it’s the best seasoned salt mix for steak, chicken, or pork!
  • Use your favorite melty cheese for the cheese sauce. American cheese, Monterey jack, Colby jack, and pepper jack are also great choices!
  • If you’re not a fan of cream of mushroom soup, just use two cheese soups instead.
  • Add a few cloves of minced fresh garlic or a teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • If you love pickles on your cheeseburgers, mix ¼ cup of pickle relish into the ground beef filling.

Storage

Refrigerate—Refrigerate leftover casserole in an airtight container for up to five days.

Freezer—It freezes great; just be sure to reheat thoroughly.

Reheat—You can zap leftovers in the microwave but the fries won't get crispy. It's best to reheat this casserole in the oven or air fryer at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. No need to cover with foil as you'll want to crisp up the fries again.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 tablespoon Montreal Steak Seasoning
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 10.5 ounce condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 10.5 ounce cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 16 ounce frozen French fries about ⅔ of a bag

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is translucent. Drain excess fat.
  • Season with Montreal steak seasoning. Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, mushroom soup and condensed cheddar cheese soup. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Arrange the frozen French fries on top of the beef mixture in a single layer. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the fries are golden brown and crispy.
  • Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
  • Serve the cheeseburger French fry casserole hot, with optional toppings such as diced tomatoes, pickles, lettuce, and additional ketchup and mustard if desired.

Notes

If you use lean ground beef, add 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil to the skillet before adding the ground beef and diced vegetables.
There is no need to thaw the fries. I used krinkle fries because I like the way they look, but you can use regular french fries if you prefer.
Be sure to bake the french fries until they are hot and crispy.
