FAQ's

What's the difference between cubed steaks and top sirloin?

Cube steak is a tenderized cut of beef, usually from the round, that's pounded flat for quick cooking. Top sirloin is a firmer, more premium cut that hasn't been tenderized.

How do I keep cube steaks from getting tough?

Slow cooking is the answer! Low heat for a long time (6-8 hours) helps break down the meat fibers, making the steak extra tender.

What can I use as a substitute for golden mushroom soup?

If you don't have golden mushroom soup, use cream of mushroom soup or make a homemade mushroom gravy with butter, flour, milk, and sautéed mushrooms.

How do you serve cubed steaks?

This dish is all about the gravy, so serve it over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice to soak up every last drop!

Top Tip

Want extra flavor? Sear the cube steak in a hot skillet before adding it to the slow cooker. This step is optional but locks in juices and adds a crispy edge!

  • Don't lift the lid! Opening the slow cooker releases heat and can mess with the cook time. Keep the lid on for the best results.
  • Prefer thicker gravy? About 30 minutes before serving, mix 2 tablespoons of flour with ¼ cup of cold water, then stir it into the crockpot. Cover and let it thicken up!
  • Meat thermometer = No guesswork. Cooked beef should be at least 145°F for medium-rare or 165°F for fully cooked.

    Variations and add-ins

    • Swap the cubed steak for chuck roast or beef stew meat if that's what you have on hand.
    • Stir in a packet of onion soup mix for extra flavor.
    • Love garlic? Add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder or 2 cloves of minced garlic when seasoning the steaks.
    • Need more veggies? Toss in sliced mushrooms, bell peppers, or frozen peas for added texture.

    Storage and reheating

Refrigeration-Store leftover cube steak in an airtight container for 3-4 days.

Freezer-Freeze cubed steak and gravy in a freezer-safe ziplock for up to 3 months.

Reheat-Thaw frozen steak in the refrigerator overnight before reheating on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave in short intervals.

    Equipment

    • Slow Cooker

    Ingredients

    • 4-6 cube steaks
    • 1 onion sliced
    • 10.5 ounce can condensed golden mushroom soup
    • ⅓ cup beef broth
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • .87 ounce package brown gravy mix

    Instructions

    • Spray the crockpot vessel with non-stick cooking spray.
    • Place the sliced onions in the bottom of your slow cooker.
    • Layer the cube steaks over the onions. Sprinkle with the brown gravy mix.
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the golden mushroom soup, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir until well combined.
    • Pour the soup mixture over the cube steaks in the slow cooker, ensuring they are well-covered.
    • Cover the slow cooker with its lid and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours. Cooking times may vary depending on your slow cooker.

    Notes

I thought the gravy was just right. However, if you prefer a thicker gravy, about 30 minutes before serving, you can mix 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour with ¼ cup of cold water until smooth.
Stir the flour mixture into the slow cooker, cover, and continue cooking until the gravy thickens slightly.

My daughter who doesn’t usually like these type of recipes and is kinda picky said it’s a 3 1/2 / 4 Stars . So I like these Crock Pot one pot and done meals and I would give it 4 1/2 Stars . Needs garlic , salt , and pepper , more Wash your Sister sauce ; which I added . Now it’s a FIVE !!
Going in my recipe rotation . Sure it’s a personal preference taste thing . I might also add more soup if I had more !!
        GREAT 😋😋😋
