FAQ's
Cube steak is a cut of beef that has been tenderized and pounded, typically using a meat mallet, to create a thin cutlet. Top sirloin, on the other hand, is not tenderized and comes from the sirloin primal cut.
When it comes to avoiding tough steaks, your crock pot is your best pal! For the most tender steak, cook "low and slow," or on low heat for a longer amount of time—just like this recipe recommends.
Use cream of mushroom soup, if you don't have the golden mushroom. Another option is to make a homemade cream sauce using butter, flour, milk/heavy cream, and sautéed mushrooms for a flavorful homemade gravy recipe.
Flavorful cube steaks taste great over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or even white rice—anything that'll sop up all the delicious gravy will do the trick!
Top Tip
On the stovetop, brown the sides of the cubed steak in a large skillet over medium heat for a seared, crisp texture before adding it to the crockpot. This is totally optional, but it locks in more juice and adds extra flavor!
- Remember, you don't have to prepare the brown gravy—simply sprinkle the gravy packet mix over the steaks and follow the recipe as directed!
- As much as the aroma will tempt you, don't lift the lid off your crockpot during cooking. This lets out heat and can throw off the temp inside.
- If you're not sure the steak is cooked, use a meat thermometer to check! The USDA recommends cooking beef to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F for medium-rare and 165 degrees for fully cooked.
Variations
- For next week's dinner, feel free to use a chuck roast or beef stew meat instead of cubed steak. You can switch up your favorite cuts of beef or use whatever is on sale at the grocery store.
- Experiment with an onion soup mix for added flavor (especially if you don't love mushrooms.)
- Like thicker gravy? About 30 minutes before serving, mix 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour with ¼ cup of cold water. Stir it into the slow cooker, cover, and continue cooking until the gravy thickens.
- Feel free to toss in some frozen veggies, such as mushrooms or bell peppers, for added heft and flavor.
- Garlic fan? Some people like to add minced garlic or a teaspoon of garlic powder to the meat when stirring in the gravy packet and soup.
- Taste test before serving, and feel free to garnish with fresh cracked black pepper or a pinch more salt if you'd like.
Storage
Refrigeration—Store leftover cube steak in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
Freezer—Freeze cubed steak and gravy in a freezer-safe ziplock for up to 3 months.
Reheat—Thaw frozen steak in the refrigerator overnight before reheating on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave in short intervals.

My daughter who doesn’t usually like these type of recipes and is kinda picky said it’s a 3 1/2 / 4 Stars . So I like these Crock Pot one pot and done meals and I would give it 4 1/2 Stars . Needs garlic , salt , and pepper , more Wash your Sister sauce ; which I added . Now it’s a FIVE !!
Going in my recipe rotation . Sure it’s a personal preference taste thing . I might also add more soup if I had more !!
GREAT 😋😋😋
