Ingredients for mummy jalapeno poppers.

For the exact measurements, please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • jalapeño peppers - be sure to scoop out the seeds and membrane, that's where the heat is!
  • room temperature cream cheese
  • crumbled bacon - 3 to 4 slices of bacon cooked until crispy and crumbled.
  • olive slices - though you can use candy eyeballs for edible eyes I prefer using sliced olives - black olives or green olives stuffed with pimentos. The green olives are especially cool, making a red eye'd mummies! Or you can even use candy eyes. Just be sure to add those after baking.
  • crescent dough - though I've made these with pie crust, crescent roll dough and puff pastry. They all looks really cool!

FAQ's

Are jalapeno poppers spicy?

Yes, they are going to be a little spicy, but the cream cheese tames the heat a bit.

What sauce goes with jalapeno poppers?

Pepper Jelly is delicious with these poppers! Ranch dressing is super yummy as well.

Does boiling jalapeños take the heat out?

A little, but the steam from the jalapeños when you're boiling them can get in your eyes. Just wash them well and soak in cold water. That helps a bit.

Tips

  • If you want to tame the heat, remove the seeds and membrane of the peppers.
  • Using a serrated grapefruit spoon will make scraping the seeds out lots easier.
  • Remember all the gloves we bought for covid? Use them now! Wearing a rubber glove while working with jalapeno peppers will keep you from burning your eyes... or contacts!
  • Don't rub your eyes - worth repeating, don't rub your eyes.

Years ago I worked in a taco shop. When it was my turn to slice the jalapeños, I didn't give it a thought and pitched in to slice a huge pile of them.

That night when I took my contacts out, I burnt my eyes and ended up going to the doctor! Even though I washed my hands, they didn't burn in the least but the oil of the peppers was still there!

Wear gloves!

Another lesser known tip is to coat your hands in vegetable oil. It's not 100%, but it's darn close. If you don't have gloves handy, this is the next best thing!

And.... you guessed it... don't rub your eyes!

Variations

Mix a thinly sliced green onion and shredded cheddar cheese or pepper jack cheese into the cream cheese for even more flavor!

Storage

Refrigerate - Store leftovers in an an airtight container, 3-4 days.

The cream cheese mixture can be made 2 days ahead of times. You can clean the peppers a day ahead of time.
