Chocolate Peppermint Patties Recipe
Equipment
- 1 13x9 Baking Sheet
- 1 Parchment Paper
- 1 Large mixing bowl
- 1 small cookie scoop
Ingredients
- 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 ½ teaspoons peppermint extract
- ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 4 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 3 cups dark chocolate chips milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips can be substituted
- 1-2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Assorted holiday sprinkles optional
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, mix together the condensed milk, peppermint extract, and vanilla extract.
- Add half of the powdered sugar, and beat on low speed. Gradually add the remaining powdered sugar and beat on low speed until a soft dough forms and the mixture is no longer sticky.

- Using a small cookie scoop (and your hands), roll into one-inch balls. Place the dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, and flatten into patties. Place into the freezer for 45 minutes.

- While the patties are in the freezer, make the chocolate dipping sauce by adding the chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Add an additional tablespoon of vegetable oil, if necessary, to reach a consistency desirable for dipping.

- Remove the patties from the freezer, and coat them with the melted chocolate. Place a patty on a fork, and fully submerge it into the melted chocolate. Lift out and tap to remove excess chocolate. Using a toothpick, gently slide the patty from the fork back to the lined baking dish. Immediately top with holiday sprinkles.

- Once all the patties have been coated and decorated, return to the freezer for 15 minutes to allow the chocolate to completely harden and set.
- Remove from the freezer, serve, and enjoy!

Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)
If you find the dough to be too sticky, messy, and have trouble forming it into balls, a simple way to fix this is to continue add powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough is more manageable. Refrigerating the dough before shaping it into patties will also help to reduce stickiness.
If the dough is too dry, crumbly, and won't stick together to form balls, simply add water to the dough, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough is more manageable. Be sure to mix well between each tablespoon of water to be sure that you're not adding too much and making the dough too sticky.
If the chocolate is too thick for dipping, add an additional tablespoon of oil. Also as the chocolate begins to cool, it may thicken. Just pop it in the microwave for 15-30 seconds to reheat it. Stir well and continue dipping.
Deb's top tips
When scooping and shaping the dough, it helps to lightly grease your cookie scoop and hands-this keeps things smooth and prevents sticking. Once you've rolled the dough into balls, press them gently to flatten; a light touch is all you need. They'll relax and spread just a bit while they rest on the pan before heading to the freezer.
