Chicken and dumplings casserole

What I love about this recipe is that it's pure comfort food! Of course. it's easy to make; that's how I roll! Along with that though, easy ingredients that you can totally customize. Even your picky eaters will gobble this right up!

This is pure nostalgia - just like Mama used to make (only easier)!! Instead of drop dumplings, layering the two mixes makes dumplings for you. It's SO easy and so good!

    Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)

Can I make my own Bisquick?

The dumplings in this recipe require leavening, and using Bisquick (or baking flour) is the easiest way to do so in the Chicken and Dumplings Casserole. You can make your own Bisquick by whisking together 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 ½ tsp. baking powder, and ¼ tsp. salt. You can also substitute the Bisquick with 1 cup of self-rising flour.

Can I use a different soup for Chicken and Dumplings Casserole?

Absolutely! What matters most here is your preference. Cream of chicken can be substituted with cream of celery or cream of mushroom soup.

What else can I use for this recipe instead of rotisserie chicken?

I love using rotisserie chicken because it's already cooked, and it makes prep a snap! You can choose to cook chicken breasts or thighs, shred them, and use them for this recipe, or you can even substitute with leftover turkey! Just be sure that the protein is cooked before adding it to the casserole dish.

Deb's tips for the perfect dish

Bisquick, pancake mix or baking flour is required for this recipe. All-purpose flour will not work.

Perfect pairings: what to serve with

The Bisquick Chicken & Dumpling is the best chicken casserole. You'll really love this easy recipe!

For side dishes, the slow cooker asparagus recipe, would be great to serve along with your meal. A nice green salad, like this one that uses that fantastic Pear Vinaigrette (my fav!). And for dessert.... how about a Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake? Amazing! What a meal!!!

In the photos, it looks like there is melted cheese on top. Is that correct?

Actually, there's no melted cheese on top, that's the golden color from the cream of chicken soup. Enjoy the recipe!!
