FAQ's
Baking on a parchment paper lined baking tray helps prevent sticking and keeps the bottoms from getting soggy.
You can use either puff pastry or shortcrust pastry. Puff pastry is more common, but shortcrust will work as well.
No, you do not need to roll out the pastry with a rolling pin. Just cut it into rectangles and then proceed with the recipe.
Yes, you should definitely egg-wash the puff pastry. This will help it to brown and also give it a nice sheen.
Things to know
- I really recommend using parchment paper on your baking sheet. It really does help your bottom crisp up nicely. However, if you don't have it on hand you can use nonstick cooking spray instead.
- You can use either hot or mild sausage in this recipe. I prefer hot sausage myself, but use whatever you like best.
- Dip these homemade sausage rolls in your favorite dipping sauce, like ketchup, barbecue sauce, honey mustard sauce, or ranch dressing.
- Make sure your puff pastry sheets are completely thawed before making this recipe.
Variations
- If you do not like spicy foods, you can leave the jalapenos out of this recipe.
- You can use turkey sausage instead of pork sausage if you prefer.
- Add more flavor to the sausage mixture by adding a dash of Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- You could shape these into twelve mini sausage rolls instead of large ones if you prefer. Reduce the cooking time to 15 to 17 minutes or until your sausage is done.
Storage
Refrigerate -Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freezer - You can make these ahead of time and freeze them. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for about an hour. Then transfer to a freezer-safe bag and store for up to 3 months. When you are ready to bake, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and bake as directed.
Reheat - These are best reheated in the oven. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 400ºF for about 10 minutes. You can also reheat them in the microwave, but they won't be as crisp. Just place them on a microwave-safe plate and heat for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
