This one hits that sweet spot right between cozy comfort food and weeknight easy. It's got all the rich, hearty vibes of lasagna, minus the fuss, with plenty of saucy pasta and that melty, stretchy cheese that makes everyone hover around the pan waiting for dinner. Husbands Delight Casserole
Equipment
- 1 9x13 casserole dish
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- 32 ounces store-bought pasta sauce about a jar and a half.
- ½ cup pasta water
- 1 pound pasta penne, rigatoni, or your choice
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef. Break it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Once browned, drain excess fat if necessary.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Season the beef mixture with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Pour the entire jar of pasta sauce into the skillet with the beef mixture. Simmer for about 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Combine the cooked pasta with the beef and sauce mixture in a large mixing bowl. Mix until the pasta is evenly coated. It should be good and saucy! If needed add the pasta water a ¼ cup at a time. Again, you want it to be saucy, not dry.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the pasta mixture. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses over the pasta.
- Add the remaining pasta mixture on top and finish with the rest of the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and the casserole is heated through.
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Enjoy the cheesy deliciousness!

FAQ's
It's a throwback to classic mid-century casseroles that were named to highlight how satisfying and crowd-pleasing they were. Think hearty, cheesy, and filling - the kind of meal that got big reactions at the dinner table. These days, it's safe to say this one's a win for everyone, not just the husbands!
Sure thing! Penne and rigatoni hold the sauce well, but egg noodles or rotini work great too. Just stick with a sturdy pasta that won't get too soft while baking.
Any jarred pasta sauce works great here, so use your favorite. If you've got a little extra time, my homemade marinara sauce is a great option and adds even more rich, fresh flavor to the dish.
Yep! Ground turkey, chicken, or Italian sausage all work well. Each one brings a slightly different flavor, so use what you have or what your family prefers.
Yes! Assemble the casserole, cover it tightly, and refrigerate for up to 2 days. When you're ready to bake, let it sit out while the oven preheats, then bake as directed.

Top Tip
Don't overcook the pasta-keep it just al dente. It'll continue to cook in the oven, and this is the difference between a casserole that holds its shape and one that turns soft and mushy.
Variations
Sneaky veggie boost - Finely chop mushrooms, zucchini, or even carrots and cook them with the onions. They melt right into the sauce and add extra goodness without anyone catching on.
If you love bold flavor, bump up the garlic with a bit of garlic powder or garlic salt and add a pinch of red pepper flakes. You can also swap in your favorite Italian seasoning blend or use homemade.

Dinner worth repeating
This is one of those meals you'll come back to again and again-it's easy, filling, and always gets a good reaction at the table. Whether you're feeding a hungry family or just want something reliable after a long day, this casserole delivers without making a big production out of it.
Give it a try, and don't forget to come back and let me know how it went!
