“Stalking” Fresno State Sweet Corn!
I’ve moved a lot. I’ve lived in eight different states and life has taken me from one end of the country to the other. I confess though, I really like California! My most exciting move took place last fall when I moved to the Central Valley of California where I now call Fresno home. Having been a bit of a gypsy, one thing I’ve found that works for me is getting to know the area – volunteering, meeting new folks, enjoying a “taste” of the area. I think it helps me to learn what makes each region unique and special.
Well, there’s been a lot of buzz going on the last week or so regarding corn…..it seems one of the things Fresno State is famous for is organic sweet corn.
So famous that people drive from as far as Los Angeles and stand in line for hours to score the delicious sweet corn. Legend has it that the kernels are as large as bubble wrap and are as sweet as sugar! Legend?…..Perhaps!
The corn went on sale on Friday at 11:30 am. I figured that I’d be safe to get there by 11:20 or so. That should be plenty of time, right? Well, when I arrived there were security guards in the parking lot directing traffic (this is not a good sign).
When I reached the store, I was directed to the end of the line – it stretched around the building!
This is where I ended up! I was number two hundred eleven….211!!! Unbelievable! Of course if that many people would stand in line for sweet corn, I needed to stay here and find out why!
Believe it or not, I waited in line for an hour and a half for sweet corn! However along the way, I met several wonderful people. We enjoyed watching a couple of young children playing amongst the corn. I had to give their Mom credit, they were so bored they were even sliding down the little hill in the dirt, Mom didn’t scold, the kids kept entertained and so did the rest of us! And that was tough as it was 92 degrees and there wasn’t a bit of shade.
Finally! I reached the front of the line and was allowed in the building (they would only let five people in at a time) and I captured 24 ears of corn!
Now the big questions is….what to make? Of course, soup was priority number one for me and on Friday I made a delicious Corn Chowder. So simple and fresh and a burst of summer sunshine! Never mind it’s 95 degrees, I enjoy soup all year long! Plus this only took about 30 minutes from start to finish and is delicious!
What else to make? I’m open to suggestions! If you have any ideas, please comment so I’ll be sure to get the word. I’ll be posting more recipes as we enjoy this limited summer time treat!
p.s. “stalking” sweet corn….get it? Couldn’t resist! Thanks for putting up with my “corny” sense of humor and thanks for reading my blog! 😀
